  1. Lizardlike reptile Sphenodon punctatus, found
  2. only on a few islands off New Zealand. It
  3. grows up to 70 cm/2.3 ft long, is greenish or
  4. black, and has a spiny crest down its back.
  5. On the top of its head is the pineal organ,
  6. or so-called `third eye', linked to the
  7. brain, which probably acts as a kind of light
  8. meter. It is the sole survivor of the
  9. reptilian order Rhynchocephalia. It lays eggs
  10. in burrows which it shares with seabirds, and
  11. has the longest incubation period of all
  12. reptiles (up to 15 months).
